Bristly sarsaparilla (Aralia hispida) is a perennial subshrub in the Araliaceae family. It typically grows to a height of 30 to 90 cm. Its erect stems, often tinged with red, are covered in stiff bristles. The leaves are alternate and compound, with toothed leaflets. Flowering occurs from June to September, producing umbels of small white flowers. The fruits are spherical drupes, initially green and turning dark purple at maturity.
This species is adapted to poor, dry, and well-drained soils, often sandy or rocky. It is commonly found in clearings, forest edges, and disturbed grounds. It is drought-tolerant and prefers sunny locations.
Sociability index: 3 to 4 → Indicates the plant’s behaviour in space and its interactions with other plants.
Medicinal and culinary uses
Traditionally, the roots of bristly sarsaparilla have been used to prepare infusions or decoctions with diuretic, tonic, and sudorific properties. They have also been used to flavour fermented beverages such as root beer. However, due to the presence of potentially toxic compounds, their use should be approached with caution and under supervision.
Ecological roles
Bristly sarsaparilla helps stabilize soil with its spreading root system. Its flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including bees, hoverflies, and certain beetles. It plays a role in supporting biodiversity in open and disturbed habitats.
Bristly sarsaparilla seeds require scarification and cold stratification to ensure germination. See the growing notes below for more details.
